Wieliczka Salt Mine

This UNESCO Heritage site, excavated since the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 1996. The mine reaches a depth of 327 meters (1,073 ft) and extends via horizontal passages and chambers for over 287 kilometers (178 miles).

Our tour was the “Tourist Route” which began with a descent of 64 meters (210 ft) by stairs. Then we were guided through a number of chambers and shown underground lakes, shrines, and salt monuments. We eventually got to a depth of 135 meters (443 ft) below the surface before returning to the surface by lift.
